The Gap: We need to better realize more value from innovation management by implementing improved management systems within organizations and enhancing our innovation management competencies and capabilities. Those tasked with delivering innovation often lack clear career pathways and do not have a professional institute to support and connect them.
The Inflection Point: The requirements for an innovation management system, specifically ISO 56001:2024, establish a common language that serves as a foundation for standards-aligned capability and body of knowledge development.
The Answer: The Institute of Innovation Management (IIM) is a practitioner-led professional institute that provides knowledge and competencies training, accreditation, and community resources to connect, grow, and professionalize innovation management across the UK and beyond.

We are a practitioner-led, standards-informed community, built openly and collaboratively across industry, academia, and the public sector.
Founded by a group of experienced innovation management professionals who recognized the urgent need for a professional institute for those who manage innovation day in and day out, the IIM has been shaped by the insight and commitment of this diverse group of practitioners and leaders from across sectors.
These contributors, alongside many others, have given their time, expertise, and vision to ensure the IIM is grounded in real needs, shared expertise, and sustained engagement.
The Institute of Innovation Management has been built openly and collaboratively.
The journey commenced with the BSI Innovation Day 2022 and ISO plenary in London, deepened through the BSI Mirror Committee strategy workshop in September 2023, and was invigorated at the BSI Innovation Day in November 2024. Here, momentum from practitioners facilitated the formation of The Innovation Management Society of the UK LinkedIn group, which now boasts around 250 members.
Ongoing discussions with BSI and Innovate UK’s Business Growth team, along with the publication of ISO 56001 in September 2024, provided the standards-informed foundation necessary for national relevance in innovation management.
Since April 4, 2025, we have convened a monthly IIM scoping meeting with a group of approximately 24 experienced innovation management practitioners, who are voluntary contributors dedicated to shaping the Institute’s purpose, proposition, offer, business model, governance, policies, and budget. This initiative is supplemented by one-to-one sessions with leaders from other professional institutes to learn from best practices.
We will be governed by a diverse board drawn from the practitioner community, ensuring that our approach to innovation management aligns with the principles of ISO 56001, while maintaining governance and transparent, accountable decision-making.
We will be collaborative and actively networked across the industry, particularly in the realm of innovation management, while protecting our impartiality and accreditation in line with ISO 56001 as a professional institute.
Responsible innovation management, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and societal benefit are the cornerstones of our professional institute, guided by the principles of ISO 56001.
Founded on ISO 56001, our professional institute is committed to innovation management, emphasizing evidence, systems thinking, and ongoing performance evaluation and improvement.
